The Orientation Year permit as an option for highly educated professionals
Jobseekers with a non-EU / EEA country nationality will need work permit / visa sponsorship to be allowed to work in The Netherlands. We have created a page explaining the applicable rules and regulations here:
https://jobs.thenextchapter.nl/pages/work-permit-information-the-netherlands.
In short: the only option is to get sponsored by an employer, willing to offer you a contract of employment. Since most companies do not have the necessary registration to act as a sponsor, this limits your chances of landing a job in The Netherlands very much.
There is however an alternative: in case you finished a Bachelor, Master of PhD/Deng degree in The Netherlands within the last 3 years, or a Master degree or Doctoral program (PhD/Deng) within the past 3 years at a global top-200 university. This is the Orientation Year permit.

Advantages and criteria for the Orientation Year permit
The Orientation Year permit, once obtained, will be valid for 1 year. Within that year, you can accept employment at a Dutch employer without need for work permit sponsorship to be offered by that employer. Also, a lower salary criterium applies compared to the regular Highly Skilled Migrant scheme. This offers a major advantage on the Dutch job market, since employers do not have to be registered sponsors in order to employ you. It will also save a prospective employer a lot of procedural burden and costs.
In order to be eligible for the Orientation Year, you have to meet certain criteria. The most important one is, that you have graduated on Msc or PhD/Deng level at a global top-200 university within the last 3 years. If you have studied in The Netherlands itself however, also a Bachelor degree is sufficient. The Orientation Year permit is something you have to apply for yourself, in person. Potential employers or recruitment agencies can not do this on your behalf.
The following official government page will explain in much more detail the applicable criteria, rules and procedures. It is highly advised to apply for the Orientation Year permit in case you meet the criteria as it can make a huge difference in being considered by Dutch employers: https://business.gov.nl/coming-to-the-netherlands/permits-and-visa/residence-permit-for-orientation-...
